Addvalue Selects GMPCS For Distribution Of Inmarsat BGAN Terminals
Pompano Beach FL (SPX) Nov 02, 2004 Addvalue Communications Monday announced the appointment of GMPCS Personal Communications, a wholly owned subsidiary of Telenor Satellite Services, as Master Distributor for its Inmarsat Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) terminals. Inmarsat BGAN service, currently planned for commercial launch in 2005, will offer high-speed circuit-switched and packet data services, plus voice telephony, via a portfolio of small, lightweight user terminals. The enhanced capabilities of the BGAN system will be made possible through a new generation of satellites, known as Inmarsat 4. The Inmarsat 4 spacecraft will be the most powerful communications satellites ever launched by a commercial organization. "We are excited about having GMPCS as a Master Distributor for AVC BGAN Terminals. Given their experience and impressive track record, we believe they will be able to effectively sell our BGAN Terminals through their distribution network," said Dr. Colin Chan Kum Lok, chairman and executive officer of Addvalue Communications. "Inmarsat's BGAN Service has the potential to revolutionize mobile satellite communications, offering high-speed data connectivity and voice communications from a terminal half the size of a laptop computer," said Jon Klein, vice president and general manager of GMPCS Personal Communications. "Addvalue's design and engineering team has produced an outstanding terminal at a very affordable price. Although commercial BGAN service is still nearly a year away, GMPCS and Addvalue are committed to having equipment on the shelf and ready for distribution as the commercial launch date approaches," Klein added. As a demonstration of its commitment to this new satellite communications technology, GMPCS has already placed an initial order with Addvalue Communications for BGAN terminals. The capabilities of BGAN will include the delivery of Internet and intranet content and solutions, LAN and WAN connectivity, video on demand, videoconferencing, fax, e-mail, phone and local area network access at speeds of up to 432Kbps. Users and markets for these services encompass both the existing customers of Inmarsat - which include users from the military, forestry, media, mining, petroleum, governments and agencies - as well as new markets focusing on corporate users and enterprise solutions.
