AREVA Launches Pre-Licensing Nuclear Power Planet Process In UK![]() Luc Oursel President of AREVA NP said: "EPR is AREVA's flagship product. I am delighted that our major clients are supporting EPR technology. Our strategy is to license EPR as quickly as possible and make it available to all clients wishing to support UK's need for low carbon generation capacity within a competitive market." |
With the OL3 project in Finland, EPR is the only third-generation reactor currently under construction. Another EPR is being built in France with EDF and the EPR licensing process is well underway in the USA. EPR is state-of-the-art nuclear technology, it features an extended life of 60 years, greater availability, easier maintainability and is fully compliant with the most demanding safety standards, including being resistant to airplane crash.
Should AREVA's application be accepted, then it is intended that the three year GDA project will be jointly managed with EDF, the world largest nuclear plant operator. This joint approach brings together the combined strengths of a vendor, and a potential licensee.
In parallel with the GDA project, AREVA will manage an Alliance of all those major utilities that support the EPR design and are considering EPR for new build in UK. The Alliance objective is to support these utilities to achieve EPR "intelligent licensee" status, in preparation for subsequent site license application.

"Our work is contingent on the outcome of the public nuclear consultation which is currently being undertaken in UK. Building public consensus is very important, so we fully support this consultation and the opportunity for the public to comment in the future on EPR, and other designs, as they move through the pre-licensing process."
