Xwing, a frontrunner in aviation autonomy technology, recently achieved a significant milestone by securing military approval for its autonomous aircraft to conduct cargo missions across California. This development was highlighted during the AGILE FLAG 24-1 exercise, a Total Force exercise that took place from January 22 to February 4, 2024, emphasizing the integration of Air Combat Command (ACC) and Air Mobility Command (AMC) in a series of operations across the state. Throughout the exercise, Xwing's autonomous aircraft system successfully completed daily missions, transporting essential cargo to various military and civilian locations, demonstrating the practicality and efficiency of autonomous flight in real-world logistics.

During AGILE FLAG 24-1, Xwing's autonomous technology was put to the test, covering over 2,800 miles of autonomous flight to vital installations including March Air Reserve Base, Vandenberg Space Force Base, and several civilian airports. The exercise showcased the autonomous aircraft's capability to integrate seamlessly into busy airspace, notably in the Los Angeles basin, while adhering to Air Traffic Control instructions and safely executing missions with precision.

The Air Force's decision to award Xwing a Military Flight Release (MFR) for Public Aircraft Operations (PAO) marks a pivotal moment in aviation history. This certification is a testament to the aircraft's safety and technical proficiency, enabling Xwing to deliver official Air Force cargo autonomously. This achievement not only demonstrates the potential of autonomous aircraft to enhance logistical operations but also signifies a leap forward in military aviation technology.

Maxime Gariel, President, CTO, and co-founder of Xwing, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, "The AGILE FLAG exercise proved the unparalleled efficiency and speed of autonomous aircraft in delivering critical cargo to dispersed locations. This capability is essential for Agile Combat Employment (ACE) operations, allowing for rapid deployment at a lower cost and reduced risk."

Kate Brown, AFWERX Autonomy Prime deputy branch chief, also highlighted the importance of this milestone, noting that the Military Flight Release certification paves the way for further experimentation and testing, thereby advancing autonomous logistics solutions for the Air Force.

The exercise underscored the role of autonomy in enhancing the Air Force's operational capabilities, demonstrating an increase in speed and a decrease in reliance on traditional heavy lift aircraft for critical cargo delivery. Xwing's technology proved to be a force multiplier, enabling the rapid dispersion of operations into contested or operationally limited environments.

Craig Milliard, Xwing Flight Test Manager, remarked on the successful deployment of their technology during the exercise, stating, "Our autonomous flights, day and night, have shown that we can meet Air Force mission objectives effectively, opening new avenues for operational deployment."

Xwing's involvement in AGILE FLAG 24-1 is part of an ongoing partnership with AFWERX, furthered by a Phase III Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract. This collaboration underscores the commitment to fostering innovation and integrating cutting-edge technologies into military operations, enhancing the United States Air Force's readiness and effectiveness in the face of evolving global challenges.

US vows decisive response to deadly drone attack in Jordan
Washington (AFP) Jan 29, 2024
The White House vowed Monday to respond decisively to an attack in Jordan it blames on Iran-backed militants, in which a drone slammed into a military base and killed three Americans while troops were in their beds. The casualties - the first US military deaths in an attack in the Middle East since the Israel-Hamas war began - raised fears of an escalating conflict, as fighting rages in Gaza and related violence plagues other parts of the region. "We are not looking for a war with Iran," US Na ... read more
