USS Helena to receive additional modifications under new contract
Washington (UPI) Oct 16, 2017 - Navy officials have announced that Huntington Ingalls Inc. has been awarded a modified contract worth more than $65 million to modernize the USS Helena, a Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine on dry-dock restriction.

The contract awarded to Huntington Ingalls Inc., announced Friday by the Department of Defense, comes on the heels of a previous contract that enabled the Newport News, Va., company to overhaul the USS Helena with upgrades while the submarine was in dry-docking selected restriction.

The previous contract awarded Huntington Ingalls $17.5 million with a financial budget cap of $18 million, according to the Department of the Navy.

The modifications to the USS Helena come just four months after its 140 member crew returned from deployment to their home port of Naval Stations Norfolk in Virginia. Navy officials told reporters that the submarine and crew traveled more than 35,000 nautical miles, which is the equivalent of 40,277 miles on land.

The USS Helena docks at naval ports in Haakonsvern, Norway, Faslane, Scotland, and Brest, France.

This is the second overhaul for the Los Angeles class submarine, which previously underwent modifications in 2009 while homeported in San Diego. The 2009 work was conducted at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and was then transferred to Naval Station Norfolk, the largest Navy base in the world.

Work on the USS Helena will occur in Newport News, Va., and is expected to be completed by April 2018.

Pentagon officials said fiscal 2018 operations and maintenance funds allocated to the Department of the Navy in the amount of $62.7 million will be obligated to Huntington Ingalls, expiring at the end of the current fiscal year.

Construction of another San Antonio-class amphibious dock ship for the U.S. Navy has officially started at a Huntington Ingalls facility in Mississippi.

A keel authentication ceremony for the future USS Fort Lauderdale, LPD 28, took place Friday when modules for the ship were joined together, according to company officials.

"Authentication of the ship's keel is a major ship event and we're looking forward to leveraging the experience and expertise of the Ingalls Shipbuilding team to achieve future production milestones," Capt. Brian Metcalf, LPD 17-class program manager for Program Executive Office Ships, said in a press release.

San Antonio-class ships support the embarking, transporting, and landing of elements of over 800 Marines by landing craft, air cushion vehicles and helicopters, and support a variety of amphibious assault, special operations or expeditionary warfare missions.

LPD-28 will be the Navy's 12th San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship. It is scheduled for delivery in 2021.

Derco, UTC extend propeller distribution agreement
Washington (UPI) Oct 18, 2017 - Derco has extended its distribution agreement with UTC Aerospace Systems for distribution of spares for the 54H60 propeller system used on C-130 aircraft.

Lockheed Martin, parent company of Derco, said Tuesday that the extension is for a 20-year period.

Derco and UTC Aerospace Systems established their initial distribution agreement in 1997.

Derco under the agreement will distribute 54H60 spares in support of international operations. The 54H60 is used on Lockkheed Martin C-130B-H/L-100 Hercules.

"This agreement between Derco and UTC Aerospace Systems ensures seamless support to legacy C-130 operators worldwide," Derco President Brian Holt said in a press release. "Our investment in 54H60 inventory allows us to extend quantity break pricing and immediate availability to customers in support of their fleets."

UTC Aerospace Systems designs, manufactures and services propeller systems.
