Australian energy company Woodside Petroleum said Wednesday it made a gas discovery off the country's western coast that's near existing LNG infrastructure.

Woodside said it ran through a 60 foot column of natural gas in the Pyxis-1 exploration well off the coast of Western Australia, confirming it as a formal discovery.

"Given its location, this successful exploration outcome offers future tie-back potential to Woodside's existing Pluto infrastructure," Woodside Executive Vice President for Global Exploration Philip Loader said in a statement.

Woodside is Australia's largest oil and gas company, serving as the operator of the giant Pluto liquefied natural gas project in the country.

Pluto operations were shut down briefly last month after a drilling rig under contract from a third party interrupted some of the facility's infrastructure.

Woodside said its production target range for 2015 was between 84 million and 91 million barrels of oil equivalent.

The company is among those streamlining its capital expenses as oil prices remain depressed. Woodside in March announced it was cutting about 300 jobs from its payroll.
