ViaSat Selected As Backbone For National SiriCOMM Network

Norcross GA (SPX) Jul 01, 2004
ViaSat Inc. is supplying a LinkStar broadband satellite communications network to SiriCOMM Inc. that will provide wide area networking for SiriCOMM fleet applications and Internet access for Wi-Fi networking services located at highway travel centers nationwide.

To supply high-speed data connections to the travel center Wi-Fi hubs, SiriCOMM signed a five-year, 400-location service agreement, valued at approximately $2.5 million, for ViaSat Immeon shared-hub VSAT services, hardware, and installation.

SiriCOMM has already announced Pilot Travel Centers as its first strategic partner and value-added reseller. Pilot will install SiriCOMM Wi-Fi Hot Spots at each of its 255 travel centers in the U.S. to become a virtual office for highway travelers and truckers in 37 states.

Using the network, trucking fleets can collect mileage, location, cargo, scheduling, and vehicle and driver performance data from trucks as they arrive, depart and drive by the travel centers. In addition, travelers can log-on to the Wi-Fi service for Internet access when they stop at participating locations.

For SiriCOMM, Immeon is offering on-demand data rates to the travel center locations. Cadco Systems will supply the remote server and Wi-Fi access point at each location. Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) is an interoperable standard for wireless Local Area Networks based on the IEEE 802.11 specification.

The LinkStar hub-based VSAT system provides efficient broadband communications for Internet access, enterprise networking, retail operations, distance learning, and other multimedia applications.

Remote LinkStar terminals receive data from a shared, 60 megabit-per-second (Mbit/s) broadcast from the access hub, and can transmit back to the hub at up to 3.3 Mbit/s. Dynamic bandwidth allocation increases or decreases data rates on-the-fly for better service and more efficient use of bandwidth.

LinkStar hubs and remote terminals are compliant with the digital video broadcast (DVB) international standard. Since its introduction in September 2001, approximately 20,000 LinkStar DVB-RCS-ready terminals have been shipped worldwide.
