Germantown - August 30, 1999 - Hughes Network Systems (HNS) announced today that Real Time Communications, the mobile-communications specialists in voice and data services, will use HNS� very small aperture terminals (VSATs) to provide voice and data communications for oil and gas exploration efforts. Real Time will deploy HNS VSATs to help clients overcome the cost and infrastructure issues associated with communicating between company data centers and remote drilling sites. VSATs will be mounted on mobile units to allow easy and rapid redeployment. "The partnering of communications technology and mobility is at its best with HNS� VSAT network," said David Bolton, president and chief executive officer, Real Time Communications. "Many oil and gas exploration operations take place in parts of the world where local communications infrastructures are either nonexistent or underdeveloped, and so cost and dependability become real issues for drilling companies. "Our HNS VSAT systems alleviate these concerns by using satellite-communications networks that are independent of ground-based infrastructures and can easily be moved. VSATs can cut costs for drilling companies in the range of 20%-50%," added Bolton. Real Time�s mobile VSATs will allow engineers at remote drilling sites to communicate locally acquired geological and engineering information such as geological formations and rate of drilling, for analysis and comment by geologists and engineers back at the company headquarters. The ability to use the greater resources at company data centers can be translated into more efficient and informed decisions at the well head. In addition, these remote sites now become parts of the company�s wide area network and allow remotely located employees email and LAN access, as well as fax, voice, and data communications. Future plans include offering audio/video services for teleconferencing, distribution of safety films, and training sessions. "There is no more cost-effective way to provide communications between a remote drilling operation and company headquarters than VSATs," said Bolton,. "Our VSAT solutions allow companies to better predict their exploration costs by offering a fixed monthly cost from one operator, rather than rates based on usage and charged from several different sources. An average exploration effort paying as much as $8,000 per month per site for just voice and fax can reduce expenses by as much as half and add data transmission at no extra cost." Real Time Communications has signed a five-year contract with HNS to provide HNS� VSAT services to their national and international customers. Using HNS� shared hub in Los Angeles, Real Time will deploy PES� 8000 terminals that connect a central data point or company headquarters to remote locations for transmission of two-way data and voice and one-way audio/video broadcasts. These terminals will be installed on mobile trailer units, which will allow companies exploring even the most isolated regions to have both voice and data communications. The self-contained unit requires minimal set up and thus reduces both installation and training costs. "Real Time Communications has recognized that VSAT communications can offer its clients affordable, high-quality voice and data communications, anytime and anywhere, without a huge outlay in capital costs," said Harry George, assistant vice president, satellite networks division, HNS. "The inherently ubiquitous nature of satellite communications enables it to transmit data and voice communications without a land-based infrastructure such as copper or fiber-optic cables, thus making it the only feasible means of transmitting communications to and from remote areas.
