Space operations increase the combat effectiveness of U.S. and allied air, land, and sea forces through the control of satellites that provide ballistic missile warning, communications, weather, navigation, and imagery capabilities. Space assets also provide the means that help other services perform their missions.

U.S. Space Command is providing the Combined Joint Task Force with instantaneous satellite communications between U.S. and NATO command and control headquarters, intelligence agencies, operations centers, and deployed forces. U.S. military space operators also continue to provide backup control of the NATO Skynet communications satellites that provide rapid and secure military and diplomatic voice and data transmissions between NATO's member nations.

The Air Force Space Command's Global Positioning System constellation of 24 satellites is providing precise navigation and timing support to coordinate the maneuver and engagement of allied aircrews and naval forces operating in the region. GPS is a critical system used by U.S. and allied aircraft and ships for delivery of precision munitions, including air and sea launched cruise missiles.

U.S. military space operations are also coordinating space-based imagery and weather information to mission planners within NATO, U.S. European Command, and the Combined Joint Task Force.

Near real-time satellite imagery and weather, combined with instant communications and the accuracy of GPS, gives allied commanders unparalleled battlespace awareness and permits rapid target selection and precision attack. U.S. Space Command is dedicated to providing the accurate and timely information that is crucial to U.S. and NATO efforts to limit collateral damage as the operation attempts to bring the warring parties in Kosovo to a negotiated peace.

Satellite Launch To Boost DTH In India

The successful launch Thursday of India's heaviest satellite from spaceport of Kourou in French Guyana may have boosted the country's space research efforts to yet another level, but it has also lifted the spirits of at least three Direct-To-Home televisions broadcasters, one of which has been waiting for years to launch its services in India.
