UN briefed on Syria's alleged nuclear activities
by Staff Writers
United Nations (AFP) July 14, 2011

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported to UN Security Council members on Syria's suspected nuclear activities Thursday during a closed-door meeting.

"Council members were briefed by the IAEA, who provided the technical details that led to its conclusion of the violation by Syria of its nuclear non-proliferation obligations," said a French source.

On June 9, the IAEA decided to report Syria's "non-compliance" with IAEA safety agreements to the UN Security Council.

A UN diplomat said nothing concrete would come out of Thursday's meeting, but they wanted to continue the pressure.

The United States pushed for the IAEA resolution to report Syria to the Security Council and said the country was not meeting its obligations according to a recent agency report.

According to that report, the Syrian site Dair Alzour (Al Kibar), which was destroyed by an Israeli plane in September 2007, was most likely used as an unregistered nuclear reactor.

Washington has been campaigning for sanctions against Syria with the support of European counties, Canada and South Korea.
