United Nations (AFP) Sept 11, 2012

The UN Security Council on Tuesday strongly condemned "terrorist attacks" in Iraq at the weekend, which left scores of people dead.

More than 30 attacks across Iraq on Saturday and Sunday killed 88 people and wounded more than 400. The assault has been claimed by an Al-Qaeda front organization, the Islamic State of Iraq.

The Security Council "condemned in the strongest terms the wave of terrorist attacks," whose targets included the French honorary consulate premises in Nasiriyah, said a statement by the 15-nation body.

Council members "expressed their deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the victims of these heinous acts and to their families, and to the people and the government of Iraq," added the statement.

More than 118 people have been killed in militant attacks in Iraq already this month.
