Turkey army confirms 'small-scale' operation in Iraq

The Turkish military confirmed it conducted a "small-scale" incursion into northern Iraq Tuesday and dealt a "heavy blow" to a group of Kurdish rebels seeking to infiltrate Turkey.

"A small-scale operation conducted by ground troops as part of hot pursuit... dealt a heavy blow," the general staff said in a statement on its website.

The troops penetrated "several kilometres" into northern Iraq, it said.

The statement did not mention how many troops took part in the incursion which began overnight.

US reviewing plans for violence-hit Afghanistan

The Pentagon confirmed Monday that the US military and its NATO partners were reviewing plans for Afghanistan, rocked by its bloodiest year since 2001 amid a fierce Taliban resurgence.
