Tropical Storm Florence Forms In The Atlantic

Tropical Storm Florence formed on Tuesday, well away from land, becoming the sixth named Atlantic storm this year, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

At 1500 GMT, the center of the storm was 1,506 kilometers (935 miles) east of the lesser Antilles islands.

Maximum sustained winds reached 65 kilometers (40 miles) per hour, with some strengthening expected by Wednesday, according to the NHC.

The forecasters said there was a possibility the storm may eventually strengthen into a major hurricane, but stressed this was still uncertain.

A five-day projection shows the center of the storm staying north of the Caribbean belt as it heads on a westerly track that would still have it hundreds of kilometers (miles) from land on Sunday.
