Miami (AFP) Aug 03, 2006 Tropical Storm Chris has weakened north of Puerto Rico, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Thursday. At 1200 GMT, the Atlantic season's third tropical storm was losing its organization, with maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers (40 miles) per hour, on the verge of downgrading to a tropical depression. "Chris is becoming disorganized in a hurry. Chris, or whatever is left of the system, is forecast to continue westward across the southeastern Bahamas very near the north coast of Cuba and eventually reach the south-central gulf of Mexico in five days," forecaster Lixion Avila said. Last year's deadly and record-smashing Atlantic season saw 28 named storms, including 15 that became hurricanes. US weather experts forecast that between eight and 10 hurricanes -- as many as six of them major -- would form in the Atlantic basin during the six-month storm season that started on June 1.
