Telstar Subsumes Orion and Apstar Monikers

Loral Space & Communications today announced that its Loral Orion satellites have been renamed to reflect their inclusion in the fleet of satellites managed by Loral Skynet.

The transponder payload of Apstar IIR is leased by Loral Orion from APT Satellite Company Ltd. for the life of the satellite.

The new names combine the Loral Orion satellites under a single, well-recognized identity for Loral?s growing constellation of high-powered satellites, offering fixed satellite services (FSS) communications coverage around the world.

These satellites join the already-orbiting Telstar 4, 5, 6, and 7 and, together with the three satellites operated by Satmex (Satlites Mexicanos, S.A. de C.V.), make up the current 10-satellite constellation of the Loral Global Alliance.

In mid-2000, EuropeStar, another Loral Alliance member, is expected to add its own high powered satellite to this group. The names Telstar 8 and 9 are reserved for future satellites. The Loral Orion satellites remain the assets of Loral Orion, Inc.

"The heritage of the Telstar name is unmatched in the satellite industry," said Terry Hart, president of Loral Skynet, which operates and markets the capacity on the Telstar fleet.

"This name, which helped pioneer the world of communications satellites, now represents one of the largest families of satellites in the industry, with the power and geographical diversity to help businesses meet a vast range of communications needs," added Hart.

Loral Skynet is a member of the Loral Global Alliance, which offers its customers the advantages of a worldwide network of satellite capacity currently on the Telstar fleet and the three-satellite Satmex fleet, as well as on future Europe*Star satellites.
