TelePIX demonstrates space-based AI Processor TetraPLEX in successful in-orbit test

TelePIX, a leader in satellite solutions, has successfully completed the first in-orbit demonstration of its TetraPLEX AI processor, an advanced on-board system designed for real-time, high-speed AI processing in space. This achievement, part of the August satellite launch, marks the world's first demonstration of satellite big data processing with AI directly in the challenging space environment.

The TetraPLEX processor, developed by TelePIX, enables direct AI processing and edge computing on satellites, eliminating the need for transmission to ground stations. This approach reduces costs and processing time while minimizing data loss. Launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, TetraPLEX achieved an operational altitude of approximately 597 kilometers, where it conducted performance tests for satellite image preprocessing and attitude control estimation - both completed successfully in space.

In one key test, the TetraPLEX satellite image preprocessing was executed in just 11 seconds, approximately 35 times faster than with traditional FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) technology. The demonstration verified the functionality of TetraPLEX's three core data processing boards: the Application Processor Board (APB) for satellite imaging and attitude control algorithms, the Data Interface Board (DIB) for sensor data verification, and the Intelligent Processing Board (IPB), which uses a commercial GPU for advanced AI processing.

The demonstration's primary objective was the satellite image preprocessing algorithm, which, despite space conditions like radiation and thermal shock, produced imagery that matched ground-level processing quality with 100% accuracy. This milestone opens new possibilities for in-orbit satellite image processing without extensive reliance on ground infrastructure.

TetraPLEX also achieved effective attitude control estimation, an essential function for satellite stability, using a Kalman filter algorithm to ensure accurate sensor data processing. This process allows TelePIX to enhance satellite stability and performance under complex space conditions.

TelePIX will continue to monitor TetraPLEX's performance over the next four months to evaluate potential radiation effects on the processor. Data gathered during this period will support the development of more resilient next-generation models.

This technological advancement will maximize the success rate of space missions and lead the future of satellite data processing."

TelePIX, a Korean company specializing in end-to-end satellite technology, has received international recognition, including a CES 2024 Innovation Award and selection as a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer. The company recently presented TetraPLEX at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) 2024, where it held an exclusive pavilion as an official sponsor.
