Students Complete 20 Femto Satellites
Ashburn VA (SPX) May 11, 2006 AeroAstro has announced the successful completion of twenty femto satellite models. The models were assembled by kindergarten students from Georgetown Day School as part of their field trip at AeroAstro's headquarters in Ashburn, Virginia. Inspired by Congressman Frank Wolf's (R-VA-10th) call for local companies to become more involved in the education of young children in the fields of math and science, AeroAstro hosted a tour of its facility. "Math, physics, biology, chemistry and engineering are all tough courses, but we have to find new, creative ways to get young kids hooked on science. We have to capture the imagination and the spirit of students while they are still in elementary school," urged Congressman Wolf. The students enjoyed a guided tour of the facility, touched real satellite components and scale models of satellites, observed laboratories and specialists in clean suits, and learned about aerospace engineering and the role of computers in satellite communications. They also participated in a craft project to construct their own life-size model of a femto-satellite, the smallest category of nanosatellite at less than one-tenth of a kilogram. "What fun - we never expected such an enthusiastic welcome! My students are very excited about space science," said Joanna Phinney, kindergarten teacher at Georgetown Day School. "We are pleased to be able to support the math, science, and technology education of K-12 students and look forward to hosting additional events in the future," said AeroAstro's founder and CEO Dr. Rick Fleeter.
