Stratospheric success for BAE Systems' PHASA-35 UAV drone

In a groundbreaking development, British engineers have successfully piloted the High Altitude Pseudo Satellite (HAPS) Uncrewed Aerial System (UAS) - PHASA-35 - to complete its first stratospheric flight. BAE Systems, a global leader in defence, aerospace, and security, conducted the trial last month in New Mexico, USA.

During the trial, PHASA-35 ascended over 66,000 feet into the stratosphere over a 24-hour period and made a successful landing. This enabled the engineers to evaluate the experimental solar-electric drone's capabilities in the outermost layers of the Earth's atmosphere.

This achievement marks a crucial phase in the development of PHASA-35 since its inception in 2018. The drone, created by Prismatic Ltd, a subsidiary of BAE Systems, is designed to function above weather systems and conventional air traffic. Its advanced design and high-altitude capabilities open up possibilities for a stable, persistent platform suitable for various applications.

From ultra-long endurance intelligence and surveillance to security, PHASA-35 brings to the table a novel solution. It holds potential for communications network delivery, including 4G and 5G, and can be leveraged for disaster relief, border protection, and other diverse applications as an alternative to traditional airborne and satellite systems.

The PHASA-35 programme is part of FalconWorks, a novel centre for advanced research and development within BAE Systems' Air sector. FalconWorks is committed to delivering a spectrum of state-of-the-art combat air capabilities to the UK and its allies.

The PHASA-35, with a 35-metre wingspan and carrying a 15kg payload, incorporates an array of world-leading technologies. This includes advanced composites, energy management systems, solar electric cells, and photo-voltaic arrays. The latter two provide energy during the day, stored in rechargeable cells, to maintain overnight flight.

The recent successful trial addressed the experimental system's performance across various aspects. It initiates a series of planned trials aiming to confirm system performance, support development activities, and validate test points. These efforts will make PHASA-35 available in defence and commercial markets worldwide.

Dave Corfield, CEO of Prismatic Ltd, commented on the achievement, "This is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved and shows the commitment of BAE Systems to invest in new technologies and markets." He further mentioned that the success of the trial reflects the diligent work of the Prismatic team and their partners, including Piran, Amprius, Microlink, Honeywell, PMW Dynamics, and the Met Office.

Cliff Robson, Group Managing Director for BAE Systems' Air Sector, said, "PHASA-35 is breaking new ground - opening up the stratosphere to new possibilities." He noted the importance of the collaborative approach to the success of this mission, with BAE Systems' global knowledge combined with innovative solar and power management technologies.

The recent trials were conducted from Spaceport America in New Mexico, in the White Sands Missile Range, and sponsored by the US Army Space and Missile Defense Command Technical Center. Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division, Detachment White Sands, provided coordination and direct support for the test flight.
