Standardized Internet Over Satellite Will Drive Growth

At Satellite 2004 Hughes Network Systems, announced that it will promote implementation of the Internet Protocol over Satellite standard (IPoS) through a multi-tiered licensing program available to all industry applications and systems providers. Licensing will run from royalty free technical documentation to the licensing of technology and technical support.

"HNS is committed to open standards and is proud to have actively contributed to the development of the IPoS standard," said Pradman Kaul, Chairman and CEO of HNS.

"IPoS is the only air interface specifically designed for efficient delivery of broadband satellite services and offers the best means to expand satellite's addressable markets worldwide."

The announcement followed IPoS' ratification by the Telecommunication Industry Association (TIA). Many of the world's leading technology companies have also endorsed IPoS as the superior industry standard.

"The growing use of IP promises to bring new and innovative communications solutions to all businesses," said TIA President Matthew J. Flanigan. "The completion of the Internet Protocol over Satellite standard is an important step in the rapid deployment of IP across various communications networks."

IPoS is the only industry standard optimized for delivery of broadband services over satellite channels. IPoS specifies a "Satellite Independent Service Access Point" (SI-SAP), which creates a well-defined interface between the satellite dependent functions and the application layers, thereby enabling an open service delivery platform.

As a result, applications designed to be compliant to SI-SAP can be easily ported without modification, and will operate over a majority of today's satellite systems. Other IPoS benefits include:

* IPoS is scalable. IPoS is employed in HNS' DIRECWAY(R) broadband satellite system and supports applications from a single home office to multinational customers operating a worldwide virtual private network.

* IPoS is field proven. IPoS is the most widely used and proven standard, implemented in approximately 300,000 terminals worldwide.

* IPoS is cost effective. Its SI-SAP open interface yields a low-cost terminal architecture that's optimized for satellite transmission, and enables the development of "plug-and-play" applications such as VPNs, VoIP, distance learning or video conferencing.

"All applications -- from email and Web browsing, to video conferencing and distance learning, to multicast of media rich content -- can be delivered more cost-effectively as IPoS compliant solutions," said Mike Cook, senior vice president and general manager, SPACEWAY.

"IPoS, already used by more than 50 percent of the broadband satellite market, will open doors to enhanced and optimized products and services for delivery over satellite networks."

At Satellite 2004, HNS will demonstrate IPoS' interoperability with the following applications and standards:

* VPN
* 802.11b
* H264
* H364
* VoIP
* Apple over DIRECWAY
* Videoconferencing
* Web browsing
