Bethesda - March 22, 2001 Aspiring broadband constellation operator SkyBridge LP has announced plans to start offering broadband IP services via GEO satellites to service providers within 2001. Internet development and an ever-increasing demand for bandwidth are fueling the market for satellite solutions. Technological progress leading to new satellite capabilities and the availability of bandwidth at lower cost is enabling this growing role of satellites in the Internet world. "Today's announcement broadens the operational scope of the company, extending SkyBridge to include all satellite technologies," said Pascale Sourisse, President and CEO of SkyBridge. "We are still 100% committed to the Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellite constellation. In addition to developing this unique broadband access system, SkyBridge will provide, using geostationary satellites, both access and content distribution offerings to service providers on a wholesale basis by the end of 2001. "The introduction of services this year will create a strong foundation for launching the LEO constellation. We know demand is there. Operators have been asking us for a service as soon as possible. This year we will have a solution for them." The company will lease satellite capacity from satellite owners. SkyBridge itself will invest in the ground infrastructure and delivery platform for access services, a portfolio of content distribution services as well as value-added services such as e-learning. The positioning of SkyBridge as a "carriers' carrier" remains unchanged. SkyBridge services will be available this year on a wholesale basis to service providers around the world. "SkyBridge is in a unique position," added Pascale Sourisse. "With the full support of Alcatel, which is the only major telecommunications player with both extensive space and terrestrial expertise, in addition to the broad range of capabilities coming from our existing partners. "SkyBridge will leverage Alcatel's extensive portfolio of Internet and telecommunications solutions and global market presence to offer advanced and cost-effective satellite-based solutions to service providers." Satellite solutions are being used for both broadcast/multicast applications and point-to-point services. End-user access combines multicast and point-to-point services, while content distribution to the "edge" of the Internet (i.e. to service providers' points-of-presence serving access local loops) is a true multicast application. To provide this complete range of services, geostationary satellites and LEO constellations essentially play a complementary role. Thanks to the large amount of capacity they provide and their low-latency characteristics, LEO systems are very well suited for point-to-point high quality services while geostationary solutions are very efficient for broadcast/multicast offerings and access services including a significant percentage of multicast data. For point-to point services, the decreasing price of satellite transponder capacity and the improvements in the price performance ratio of ground equipment mean that satellite access is becoming increasingly competitive in areas of low user density. The economics of broadcast/multicast allied to a two-way access capability will enable SkyBridge to offer a low cost access service in areas beyond the economic reach of terrestrial broadband solutions. The SkyBridge service will be used by service providers not only in areas with a projected limited user density but also by new entrants to serve territories before user density is sufficient to justify the roll-out of terrestrial solutions like wireless local loop. Satellite multicast for content distribution to the "edge" of the Internet and to corporate sites has numerous advantages over terrestrial technology. Satellites offer very high-quality broadband data streams, and a single transmission from a central operations center can be delivered to any number of receiving sites. In addition to reducing costs, the single long hop of the satellite link replaces all the small hops of terrestrial content distribution and bypasses potential points of error, thus improving quality of service. SkyBridge Broadband Services will be available on a wholesale basis from later this year.
