Freetown (AFP) Feb 4, 2011 Sierra Leone is to ban the importation of all products and substances known to damage the ozone layer, the director of the state-run Environmental Protection Agency Kolleh Bangura said Friday. Bangura told AFP Sierra Leone would "ban the importation of all ozone-depleting substances as of April 1." The ban will apply to the importation of goods such as old refrigerators, which use materials known to damage the ozone layer. "A recent workshop has sensitised customs and marine officials as well as other stakeholders including fire-fighters on the harmful effect of ozone-depleting substances," Bangura said. "Sierra Leone has made progress in the issue of ozone depletion between 1990 to 2000 introducing environmental policies, strategies and regulations but practical control and management have been severely affected by lack of funding," said Bangura. Parliament passed a ban in 2008 but it was not implemented due to a lack of funding in the country, which is one of the world's poorest after a decade-long civil war ended in 2002.
