Atlanta, July 17, 1998 - The Australian outback is soon to have one of the world's most advanced satellite telecommunications systems. Telstra has chosen Scientific-Atlanta as the preferred supplier for a satellite-based system to provide rural Australia with sophisticated telecommunications services. The system will handle voice, fax and data traffic with quality equal to or better than typical terrestrial systems. Everyday features available to city-based users such as call diversion, call waiting and reliable lines for dial up Internet connects will be made available to Telstra's rural customers through a satellite based solution. Dial-up sessions for facsimile and Internet at 14.4 kilobits per second are now possible with 28.8 kilobits dial-up access soon to follow and ISDN an upgrade option for a future government to consider. The satellite footprint used by Telstra covers all of Australia where customers will connect to the new system using 1.2 - 2.4 meter dish antennas, depending on location. The system can detect immediately if you are calling an Internet service provider and automatically assign a connection that can handle modem data. Telstra's new rural satellite service will be based on Scientific- Atlanta's Skylinx(TM) digital telecommunications network system. It can supply this level of quality and service cost-effectively because it uses DAMA (Demand Assigned Multiple Access) technology. This enables the use of satellite channels on an as-needed basis, instead of having them permanently assigned. Since there are no dedicated station-to-station links the number of channels needed to service the entire network is lowered. A Skylinx network avoids having to ``double-hop'' through a satellite, reduces space segment costs, and improves signal quality. The reduction in satellite bandwidth, which can be as much as 80 percent, coupled with lower equipment requirements, adds up to dramatically lower operating costs. Telstra Corporation Limited is Australia's leading telecommunications company. It is one of Australia's largest businesses and one of its biggest employers. Telstra offers a full range of phone, fax, mobile, and data services to Australia's business and consumer customers.
