Sanders Gets A $225 Million THAAD With Missile Contract
Nashua - October 11, 2000 Sanders, a Lockheed Martin Company, has received an eight-year, $225 million award from Lockheed Martin in support of the Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) phase of the U.S. Army's Theater High Altitude Air Defense (THAAD) system. Sanders' Microwave, Space and Mission Electronics business area received initial funding of $4.5 million to provide an advanced missile seeker, mission checkout console, and contractor logistics support for the EMD phase of the program. THAAD is the first weapon system designed specifically to defend U.S. and allied soldiers, military assets and population centers from the threat of a theater ballistic missile attack. To achieve the lethality required to defeat ballistic missile warheads, the THAAD system destroys them through direct "hit-to-kill" targeting. Sanders' sophisticated missile seeker provides stabilized infrared imagery of the targeted warhead. The seeker allows terminal homing and aim point selection for the kinetic energy, hit-to-kill, interceptor. Sanders will deliver 49 flight and flight representative seekers. Sanders will also provide the Missile Checkout Console (MCC) ground equipment, used to test and verify the missile operation during fabrication and to support flight tests. Fernando Faria, Sanders' THAAD program director, said, "Sanders has assembled an outstanding team to provide this highly sophisticated defense capability for our nation. We are proud to be part of such an important U.S. Army program." The EMD phase will demonstrate the system's capabilities through a series of ground and flight tests, and validate system manufacturing processes through low-rate initial production. THAAD EMD engineering work will be performed at Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Sunnyvale, Calif., and Huntsville, Ala., facilities under the program direction of Lockheed Martin Missiles & Fire Control, Dallas, Texas. The THAAD program is managed by the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization and executed by the U.S. Army Program Executive Office, Air and Missile Defense, and the U.S. Army THAAD Project Manager in Huntsville. The Sanders portion of the THAAD EMD work will be performed at facilities in Nashua and Merrimack, N.H., and Lexington, Mass. The first flight test is planned for 2004. Sanders is an operating company of the Lockheed Martin Corporation, and a major producer of aircraft self-protection systems and tactical surveillance and intelligence systems for all branches of the armed forces.
