Russia says Ukraine threats will not move Black Sea fleet

 The issue of Russia's Black Sea fleet docking in the Ukrainian port of Sevastopol will not be resolved by "threats" and "blackmail", Russia's vice-prime minister said Saturday, according to Russian news agencies.

"I want to emphasise: an issue this important must be resolved in a purely civilised manner and only on the basis of a mutual accord. Obvious blackmail, threats or demagoguery have never and will never do any good," Sergei Ivanov was quoted as saying by the agencies.

The two countries have been at odds over Ukraine's demand that the Russian Black Sea fleet leave Ukrainian ports by 2017.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko signed a decree on May 21 requesting legislation for the Black Sea fleet base in Sevastopol to be shut down by 2017 -- the date when a 20-year post-Soviet Union lease ends.

Ivanov, speaking on the occasion of the 225th anniversary of Sevastopol, said that the Russian fleet currently "defends not only the interests of Russia at its southern frontier, but also those of Ukraine's southern borders."
