Revenge blast in China injures 12: state media
Beijing (AFP) July 2, 2008 A man angry over the demolition of an illegal structure he owned in central China blew up two bottles of compressed gas in an attack on Wednesday that hurt 12 people, state media said. The man, identified as Tian Kaiyou, lit the gas cylinders on fire and then drove them to a local government office in Zhangjiajie in Hunan province, the China News Service said. The resulting explosion left 12 people injured, five seriously, it said. It was not immediately clear what type of gas was used. The attack occurred at the offices of the local street committee, the lowest of China's many layers of government. Tian was arrested within minutes of the attack, it said. China sees thousands of such violent public outbursts each year as ordinary Chinese -- faced with an unresponsive legal system, rampant official corruption and lack of a free media -- lash out over various grievances. China last weekend ordered local officials to take steps to prevent any such protests from escalating to the point that they tarnish next month's Beijing Olympics.
