Raytheon-SAIC Team Selected For NATO Theater BMD Work

Two businesses of Raytheon Company are part of a multinational team selected as the preferred bidder to support the integration of the NATO Active Layered Theater Ballistic Missile Defense (ALTBMD). The estimated value of the work is $95 million. Most of the work will be performed in the Netherlands with the participation of Raytheon Missile Systems and ThalesRaytheonSystems.

NATO is working to network existing and future national weapon systems, sensors, battle management and command, control and communications systems into an integrated defense for the protection of alliance military forces and critical assets.

The team, lead by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), will assist in this effort by developing and verifying proposed ALTBMD architectures using an integration test bed that it will design and operate under the contract.

Through the application of advanced architectures, modeling, simulation and extensive prototyping, Team SAIC will help the ALTBMD Program Office use NATO's existing capability to create an effective and efficient air and missile defense system.

"Raytheon brings to this effort its broad and deep capabilities in systems engineering and integration, ballistic missile defense sensors and interceptors, battle management command, control and communications and information," said Michael Booen, Raytheon vice president of Advanced Missile Defense.

ThalesRaytheonSystems will provide its expertise as a systems of systems supplier to NATO, as the lead system integrator and a major contributor for system engineering and test bed development. ThalesRaytheonSystems is the prime contractor for NATO's ACCS (Air Command and Control System). This system will unify air defense systems in Europe and provide the necessary architecture for ALTBMD deployment.

Raytheon's missile defense programs range from the sea-based Standard Missile-3, to the land-based Patriot weapon system, the Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle, Kinetic Energy Interceptor, sensors such as Sea-based X-band Radar, Upgraded Early Warning Radar, the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense radar and fire control, and the Space Tracking and Surveillance System.

Northrop Grumman Fires Rocket Motor For Missile Defense Interceptor

The Northrop Grumman Corporation and Raytheon Company team for the Kinetic Energy Interceptor (KEI) missile defense program successfully fired a Stage 1 rocket motor today. This test marks the second in a series of risk-reduction ground firings for the KEI rocket motors that will lead to the first KEI booster flight test in 2008.
