Manassas - July 25, 1999 - Lockheed Martin Space Electronics & Communications has licensed the right to develop a radiation hardened version of the PowerPC 750. The RAD750 will be the most powerful radiation hardened microprocessor ever developed, with 10 times the performance of the current generation processors. RAD750 performance is expected to be 250-300 millions of instructions per second (MIPS) over the Mil-Spec temperature range. RAD750 is architecturally and functionally identical as well as pin compatible to the PowerPC 750. A low risk development approach is being used, leveraging the original PowerPC 750 database for design and verification. The RAD750 will be fabricated in a 0.25 micron CMOS process and include proprietary radiation hardened circuit designs. Based on early test site hardware, first pass parts will achieve Single Event Upset (SEU) hardness levels of 1E-11 upsets/bit-day (approx. 1E-5 upsets/processor-day) and Total Dose of greater than 200Krads (Si). Prototype hardware is expected mid-2000, with production availability by year-end.
