Quake kills seven in China's Tibet: Xinhua
by Staff Writers
Beijing (AFP) Sept 19, 2011

A strong quake that struck the India-Nepal border late Sunday killed at least seven people and wounded another 22 in neighbouring Tibet, China's official Xinhua news agency said Monday.

China National Radio said the 6.9-magnitude quake was strongly felt in China's Tibet Autonomous Region, where several homes in the remote county of Yadong collapsed and electricity was cut off.

Four aftershocks, with the largest registering magnitude 4.8, shook the region Monday morning as rescue teams rushed to assess the damage, it said.

At least 24 people were killed in India in Sunday's quake, with at least five more dying in Nepal.

The quake was felt across a wide region including the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan after it struck the border of Sikkim and Nepal at about 6:10 pm (1240 GMT) on Sunday, according to the US Geological Survey.

Its epicentre was just over 60 kilometres (40 miles) northwest of Gangtok, at a relatively shallow depth of 19.7 kilometres (12 miles). The quake was followed by two strong aftershocks.
