Police seize weapons in monasteries in northwest China: report
Beijing (AFP) April 15, 2008 Police seized weapons in six monasteries in a Tibetan-populated area of northwest China which has recently been the scene of unrest following violence in Tibet, state media reported on Tuesday. Police found a gun, 10 kilogrammes (22 pounds) of dynamite, five detonators and seven knives in one major monastery in the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, part of the northwestern province of Gansu, Xinhua news agency said. They confiscated five bullets in another monastery, and five knives and 11 flags of the Tibetan government-in-exile in four others, Xinhua reported, quoting the provincial government. The monasteries were all located in Hezuo City and Xiahe County in Gannan, where unrest occurred following protests in Tibet against Chinese rule in March. Riots in the Himalayan region came after days of peaceful protests in the capital Lhasa against 57 years of Chinese rule and quickly spilled over into other parts of China inhabited by Tibetans, including Hezuo and Xiahe. Exiled Tibetan leaders say more than 150 people have died in the Chinese crackdown on the demonstrations. China insists it has acted with restraint and killed no one, while blaming Tibetan "rioters" for the deaths of 20 people. So far, 2,204 people, including 519 monks, have surrendered to the police in connection with the unrest in Gannan, Xinhua said.
