Pakistan to Launch First Communications Satellite This Year
Islamabad - Mar 24, 2002 Pakistan's first communications satellite will be launched by the end of this year, Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Atta-ur-Rehman said last week while speaking at the inaugural session of the two-day International Conference on the "Use of New Information Technologies in the Teaching of Science" that opened in Islamabad March 17. The minister said things are moving smoothly for the launching of the satellite and hoped that a formal contract would be signed within six weeks. Adding that this will provide substantial opportunites to boost Pakistan's communication technologies and allow further developments in this field. At the conference the minister also outlined measures to promote information technology in the last two years. He said projects are underway to put up high speed fiber loops around major cities of the country including Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad and will be completed in the next 12 to 18 months. This will provide high speed internet access in major cities of the country. He expressed the hope that the conference will yield positive results and the foreign and local delegates will be able to develop programs, which may be mutually beneficial. The two day conference is being attended by delegates from 11 countries in addition to those from Pakistan. The conference aims to foster the creation and dissemination of knowledge for better learning in engineering, mathematics and sciences.
