Orbimage Adds To GeographyNetwork.com

Orbital Imaging Corporation (Orbimage) said Monday it would become a charter partner for ESRI's newly introduced Geography Network Internet initiative at www.geographynetwork.com which provides a global marketplace for geographic data and services.

Orbimage will offer its OrbView Cities high-resolution digital imagery through GeographyNetwork.com, enabling Geography Network users to immediately access OrbView Cities high-resolution digital imagery of major urban areas around the world, totaling over 125 cities by year-end.

ESRI's Geography Network provides the infrastructure needed to facilitate the exchange of geographic information between data providers, service providers and users around the world.

The Internet is used to deliver geographic content to the user's browser and desktop. Content may be provided in the form of raw data, imagery (e.g. OrbView Cities) or maps.

Also, using this data, advanced services will be provided that include lifestyle mapping, population demographics, crime mapping, climate modeling, real-time weather reports, flood risk mapping, address geocoding and network routing.

OrbView Cities imagery is being hosted for the Geography Network at Orbimage's headquarters in Dulles, Virginia. Using ESRI's innovative ArcIMS Internet server software, users are able to immediately access the OrbView Cities imagery archive through the GeographyNetwork.com gateway.

Imagery customers will have the option to either purchase imagery by the square mile and pay per transaction or subscribe to access the OrbView Cities archive remotely at anytime.

ESRI also plans to include a direct link from their GIS software packages, such as ArcView GIS and ArcInfo, to the Geographic Network data sources, allowing users to conveniently access OrbView Cities imagery during GIS work sessions.

Orbimage's OrbView Cities product line is a comprehensive source of up-to-date high-resolution imagery of key metropolitan areas around the world.

The imagery is fully processed to correct for camera and terrain distortion and is in a format that is ready to use in leading GIS software packages such as ArcView GIS and ArcInfo. OrbView Cities imagery offers high clarity, up to 12 bits per pixel, consistent geolocation accuracy and 1:24,000 mapping scale compatibility.

The OrbView Cities online archive currently contains digital imagery from a number of aerial providers. It will be expanded to include high-resolution satellite data from Orbimage's planned OrbView-4 and OrbView-3 satellites in 2001. In addition to the Geography Network, OrbView Cities imagery is also available from Orbimage's web site at www.Orbimage.com.

According to Mark Pastrone, Vice President of Marketing and Strategic Development for Orbimage, "The Geography Network is a very important Internet distribution channel for our imagery products.

"We have dedicated significant hardware and software resources to this program because it matches our vision of providing immediate access to aerial and satellite imagery for the GIS marketplace," added Pastrone.

    Satellite Launch To Boost DTH In India

    The successful launch Thursday of India's heaviest satellite from spaceport of Kourou in French Guyana may have boosted the country's space research efforts to yet another level, but it has also lifted the spirits of at least three Direct-To-Home televisions broadcasters, one of which has been waiting for years to launch its services in India.
