Dulles VA (SPX) Nov 16, 2005 Orbcomm announced Tuesday it has commissioned a new Gateway Earth Station in Almaty, Kazakhstan, near the southern border with China. The new station will be fully operational by December 1, 2005. Gateway Earth Stations (GES) are terrestrial links to the Orbcomm network of low-earth orbit satellites. This new GES provides a 1,500-mile coverage radius enabling Orbcomm to pursue regulatory approvals to expand near real time service into parts of China, Russia and the Middle East through the Orbcomm low-earth orbit satellite network. LeoSat LLC, the country representative for Kazakhstan, has started marketing satellite data services to transportation, oil, gas, utility and government customers in Kazakhstan, which has significant undeveloped petroleum reserves. This new GES is Orbcomm's latest effort to advance its international growth strategy, bringing the number of operating stations to 13. Orbcomm and its international network of licensees and representatives hold regulatory approvals to provide satellite data communications in more than 50 jurisdictions around the world. The commissioning of this new GES allows Orbcomm's international value-added resellers to immediately begin deploying Orbcomm subscriber communicator units in this rapidly developing region. "The commissioning of this Gateway Earth Station in Kazakhstan is an important milestone for Orbcomm as we continue driving our international growth strategy through the expansion of our global network," Jerry Eisenberg, chief executive officer of Orbcomm, said. "The near real time access to the Orbcomm network that this GES will provide is an ideal mechanism for tracking, monitoring and controlling remote assets throughout the region. This is an opportunity that has been underserved by existing wireless carriers up until now," Jury Tarnopolsky, president of LeoSat, said. "The combination of continuous coverage and low-cost access is a boon to companies seeking a reliable and cost-effective solution to secure their capital assets."
