Navigating Ireland Gets Easier
Dublin, Ireland (SPX) Jun 16, 2008 Ireland is the only country in Europe without a Post Code. Ireland is also unique in that 40% of its addresses are non unique and townland (area) based. Commercial SatNav users as well as over 120,000 working immigrants and nearly 1 million driving visitors to Ireland annually have had significant difficulties finding addresses both with and without SatNav's To resolve this issue GPS Ireland has introduced a coordinate based Post Code - PON Code or PONC - which uses an algorithm to convert Lat and Long to a 7 Character alphanumeric code. Garmin have adopted this code for testing on their Nuvi 700 series of SatNav's. The code is accurate to +/- 6 meters with respect to Latitude and Longitude and the local Grid System - ITM. Anyone can get their PON Code or view an existing one at www.irispostcodes.ie from 16th June 2008 when it becomes fully useable for the Public, including visitors to Ireland. "This will be a major time and fuel saving solution for the logistics industry in Ireland itself and from the UK delivering to Ireland", says Gary Delaney GPS Consultant at GPS Ireland Consultants Ltd who also highlighted the benefits to tourists and the tourist industry. With PON Codes, Ireland will become one of the few countries to use a coordinate based Post Coding System to directly support the use of GPS and SatNav.
