NG Appoints Douglas H. Young VP, Space Systems And CEV Program Manager

Douglas H. Young: Vice President, Space Systems and Crew Exploration Vehicle Program Manager Northrop Grumman Integrated Systems.

Northrop Grumman has named Douglas H. Young vice president of space systems for its Integrated Systems sector and Crew Exploration Vehicle program manager.

He will report to Gary W. Ervin, sector vice president for the Integrated Systems business area that leads the Northrop Grumman/Boeing Crew Exploration Vehicle team.

In this new assignment, Young will direct the sector's efforts to define and produce next-generation space systems for NASA's Constellation Systems - the architecture of human and robotic space systems, launch systems and lunar infrastructure that will allow astronauts to travel to the International Space Station, the moon, Mars and beyond.

He currently leads a company-wide integrated product team tasked with addressing those opportunities.

Young will also head up the Northrop Grumman-led industry team competing for a contract to design and produce NASA's new Crew Exploration Vehicle, the primary human space transportation system within Constellation Systems. He previously served as the capture leader for this team.

"With Doug guiding Integrated Systems' civil space programs, Northrop Grumman has become recognized as a major competitor in the human space systems arena, as demonstrated by its recent selection to compete for the Crew Exploration Vehicle project," said Ervin.

"We're confident that his vision and focus on safety and customer satisfaction will allow us to continue expanding our role in the nation's space exploration program."

For the past 10 years, Young has been driving the development of Northrop Grumman's human space systems capabilities.

By applying the company's expertise in managing large, complex, mission-driven systems such as the B-2 bomber to NASA human space programs such as the Orbital Space Plane, the Space Launch Initiative and the X-33 single-stage-to-orbit space system, he has positioned Northrop Grumman to lead the development and production of major NASA space exploration systems.

He will draw upon the engineering and program management experience he acquired as a key member of the company's B-2 development program to guide critical technology and program integration decisions for human spaceflight systems.

Young earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Connecticut and a master's degree in systems management from the University of Southern California.

He has also attended a number of executive development programs, including the executive Defense Systems Acquisition and Advanced Program Management courses.
