LockMart Win Navy Lab RLV Research Contract


Sunnyvale - December 24, 1999 -
Lockheed Martin Missiles & Space's Strategic Missile Programs (SMP), Sunnyvale, Calif., was recently awarded a contract from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to study Advanced Carbon Heatshield & Insulation Materials Technology that could be used in future reentry vehicle development.

Missiles & Space was one of two companies to receive the competitive award out of 14 offerers that responded to ONR's solicitation. The contract, worth $398,158.00, will run through February 22, 2001.

The objective of the ONR sponsored research project is to develop advanced processing methods and advanced carbon composites for reentry body heatshields and other reentry system components for Naval strategic and hypersonic tactical missiles at a much lower cost.

Under this contract, Missiles & Space will determine the feasibility of fabricating an in-situ braided, stretch broken fiber reentry body heatshield that is resin-impregnated using a Missiles & Space Advanced Technology Center developed Vacuum-Assist Resin Transfer Molding process.

"This is a significant win for SMP because it demonstrates we can succeed at winning new business from a new customer based on competitive pricing and superior technology," said Duane Jensen, Lockheed Martin Project Manager, Advanced Heatshield Technologies. "This contract represents an additional avenue to evaluate low-cost heatshield fabrication methods to provide maximum value for our Navy strategic systems customer."

    Satellite Launch To Boost DTH In India

    The successful launch Thursday of India's heaviest satellite from spaceport of Kourou in French Guyana may have boosted the country's space research efforts to yet another level, but it has also lifted the spirits of at least three Direct-To-Home televisions broadcasters, one of which has been waiting for years to launch its services in India.
