Sunnyvale - 12, 1999 - Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems, a new unit of Lockheed Martin Missiles & Space, Sunnyvale, CA, will combine proven experience and leading edge technology to serve global customers in the marketing, sales and production of commercial satellite systems. Peter L. Kujawski will serve as president of the new enterprise, reporting to Mike Henshaw, president of Missiles & Space. Kujawski has 31 years of experience with the corporation, including leadership roles in the Electronics and Information sectors. He most recently served as president of Lockheed Martin operations in Eagan, MN and Akron, OH. "Pete has an outstanding record of driving business growth in highly competitive market environments," said Henshaw in announcing the new unit. "Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems will enhance our focus and competitiveness in a marketplace that continues to offer tremendous potential." "I am excited about the challenge of leading this new enterprise into a century in which space technology will serve our world in ways that are only bounded by the imagination," Kujawski said of his new position. "We are totally committed to growing market share in the commercial satellite business." Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems draws on a successful legacy of more than 750 spacecraft produced and orbited by Lockheed Martin Missiles & Space for government and commercial customers. This depth of experience is combined with powerful new technology represented by systems like the A2100 for geostationary communications, LM900 bus for the world's most advanced commercial remote sensing system, Ikonos 1, set to launch this year for Space Imaging Inc., and LM700 bus which forms the backbone of the Iridium space-based telecommunications network that successfully began service in 1998. "These are truly awesome capabilities, but we are not content with the status quo and have already made investments in next-generation systems and facilities," Kujawski stressed. "Our goal is to provide the best value to our customers in terms of quality and capability delivered at the right price and at a pace to meet market demands." The creation of Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems further extends the reach of Lockheed Martin into the commercial space marketplace and complements recent actions taken by the corporation including the formation of Lockheed Martin Global Telecommunications. Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems will build geostationary and non-geostationary communications satellites for customers worldwide including Lockheed Martin Global Telecommunications. In addition, the portfolio of Commercial Space Systems will include remote sensing spacecraft for commercial customers like Space Imaging as well as international governments. Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems will focus on building and marketing turnkey satellite systems including the spacecraft, ground systems, launch operations and on-orbit support. Lockheed Martin Global Telecommunications will play the leadership role for Lockheed Martin in the space-based telecommunications services part of the business. "We believe that this approach gives Lockheed Martin Corporation a formidable competitive posture across the full spectrum of the space-based services and spacecraft production marketplaces," Kujawski noted. "Fundamentally important in the creation of Commercial Space Systems is the commitment to develop standard products and technology to serve a wide range of customers including commercial and government," he said. As part of the drive toward increased operational efficiency and standard products, Lockheed Martin Missiles & Space is embarked on an aggressive campaign to streamline its organizational structure. This includes combining similar technologies into single organizations, making major reductions in executive and middle management positions, and driving standard technology and products through centralized organizations for Engineering & Technology and Product Operations.
