Oslo (UPI) May 24, 2005 A Norwegian telecommunications group said Monday Kenya will become its hub in Africa. Telenor Satellite Services of Oslo said its subsidiary, Taide, has embarked on a joint venture with Kenya Data Networks to offer an alternative to existing communications networks across Africa. Over 50 percent of Taide's capacity is already in use, Telenor said. The joint venture provides Internet service providers, calling-card operators, and corporate clients with access to Internet services and virtual private networks, as well as international public switched phone network systems via voice over Internet protocol, or VOIP. "Kenya is already a major hub in this region both in transport and international aviation, and there is no reason why it should not also be the same in terms of information and communications technology," said Kjell Harald Dalen, Norway's ambassador to Kenya "I believe this can be a major step toward bringing Kenya up to an international level in interconnectivity - something that will be important both for business and for those of us who either have a professional or personal need to use this form of communication."
