Israel to react to any 'provocation' by Iran ships

by Staff Writers
Jerusalem (AFP) Feb 22, 2011
Israel will respond immediately to any "provocation" by two Iranian warships in the Mediterranean and has put its navy forces on high alert, a senior Israeli source told AFP on Tuesday.

Speaking shortly after two Iranian warships entered the southeastern Mediterranean after travelling through the Suez Canal, the source said the Israeli navy had heightened its alert and was closely monitoring the vessels.

The source said Israel would "not initiate any action" against the Iranian vessels, but if the Iranians deviated in any way that could be considered "a provocation" there would be an "immediate Israeli response."

He said discussions had been held, and the Israeli forces already had their orders on how to respond.
