Israel in new bid to ready civilians for non-conventional war
Jerusalem (AFP) Dec 23, 2007 The Israeli army announced on Sunday a new campaign to prepare civilians for conflict, with an emphasis on the dangers of attack with chemical or biological weapons. The campaign, which will be launched in the coming days, will provide detailed information on how to protect the home against chemical weapons. Civilians will be instructed how to choose a protected room and how to seal doors and windows to prepare it for non-conventional attack. While most Israelis have access to a bomb shelter, civilians are advised to stay in a sealed room at home in the event of chemical or biological strike. The campaign will include a guide book that will be distributed to every household as well as television broadcasts, a website and a telephone information centre, the army said. The campaign was initially planned for earlier this year but was put on hold amid a war of words with Syria which Israel did not want to escalate, a military source said. In recent months, the Israeli army has collected hundreds of thousands of gas masks it had distributed to civilians since the 1991 Gulf War in the face of fears that the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein would load the missiles it fired at Israel with non-conventional warheads. Pentagon orders 3,000 mine-resistant armored vehicles
Washington (AFP) Dec 19, 2007The Pentagon said Wednesday it has ordered more than 3,100 new mine-resistant armored vehicles worth some 2.6 billion dollars, with the aim of eventually owning a fleet of more than 15,000. |
