Intersputnik Provides Transatlantic Satellite Broadcasting of Russian World TV Channel
Moscow - Feb 18, 2004 The Intersputnik International Organization of Space Communications and the Russian World TV Channel, Russia today announced that they have contracted for the lease of transatlantic capacity on the ATLANTIC BIRDTM 1 (12.5o West) satellite which is part of Eutelsat's fleet in order to transport Russian World programming direct from Moscow to Atlanta, USA. Intersputnik provides this satellite resource to Russian World based on a distribution agreement with Eutelsat, one of the world's leading satellite operators. Russian World TV is broadcasting in the US as a 24-hour Russian language service. This channel was launched specially for the Russian-speaking audience and Americans interested in Russian culture, language, history and modern life in Russia. Russian World programming includes independent newscasts, interactive live shows, analytical and political programs, popular talk shows and games, educational and children's programs, entertainment and music, serials, classic feature films and documentaries as well as cartoons. Russian World is transmitted via ATLANTIC BIRDTM 1 in the DVB-S format (Ku band; transponder D5; receive center frequency 11,581.85 Mhz; bit rate 3,700 kbps; 2/3 FEC; linear vertical polarization). The signal from ATLANTIC BIRDTM 1 is downlinked in Atlanta, Ga., further retransmitted to Telstar 7 and then distributed in the OlympuSAT-1 package to head receivers of cable networks. The signal is uplinked to the satellite by a Multipurpose Satellite Communications Center based at Moscow's NetworkService Company teleport. This center incorporates a digital platform for signal compression and generation of program bouquets. It is connected to most major switching and video broadcasting centers in Moscow and provides for simultaneous operations via several satellites in Eutelsat's system and Intersputnik satellites. According to Intersputnik's Sales Director Stefan Kollar, the launch of Russian World on ATLANTIC BIRDTM 1 is a first successful step towards the implementation of a joint project of Intersputnik, Eutelsat and NetworkService aimed at offering a bouquet of Russian federal and regional satellite programming as well as transmission of CIS TV channels to on-the-air or cable networks in Europe and America. The ATLANTIC BIRDTM 1 spacecraft is part of Eutelsat's Atlantic Gate neighbourhood which hosts three ATLANTIC BIRDTM satellites and offers substantial opportunites for transatlantic video, audio, IP and data transmission. With its 24 Ku-band transponders, ATLANTIC BIRDTM 1 is optimised for bidirectional service between the US East Coast, Europe, Northern Africa and the Near East. An exceptionally wide range of offered services meets any requirements related to the transmission and reception of TV programs, corporate networking, news gathering, Internet backbones, direct access to such backbones as well as other corporate services.
