Indosat Scandle Claims President

Jakarta (AFP) September 16, 1999 -
The president of Indonesia's state-owned satellite operator has submitted his resignation following the discovery of irregularities in dividend payments, the company said Thursday.

PT Indonesian Satellite Corporation (Indosat) said Tjajono Soerjodibroto had tendered his resignation to the board of commissioners owning moral responsibility.

"This request will be discussed in the extraordinary general shareholders' meeting to be held on October 14 for shareholders' approval," the company said in a statement.

"The resignation request was submitted as a reflection of his moral responsibility to the employees and professional responsibility as the president of PT Indonsat," it said.

Indosat finance director of PT Indonesian Satellite Corp. (Indosat), Herman Simanjuntak, was dismissed by the government effective Wednesday over the irregularities.

Sofyan Djalil, spokesman for the State Enterprises Ministry, has said Tjahjono had been served a warning on the issue.

Pressure on Tjahjono to resign has mounted since an independent audit found irregularities in the handling of government portion of the company's dividend.

Indosat investor relations manager Budi Prasetyo told AFX-Asia, an AFP-affiliated financial news wire, that Tjahjono decided to resign following a meeting between employees and the board of commissioners on September 14.

Prasetyo said the employess questioned him about the dividend irregularities.

"I think the resignation is a reflection that he takes the responsibility for his failure to supervise his colleagues (in management)," he said.

Press reports have quoted Indosat commissioner Sasmito Dirdjo as saying the sacking of Simanjuntak was related to the company's handling of a 112.7 billion rupiah (13.4 million) dividend owed to the government.

The money had not been transferred immediately to the government's accounts.

Simanjuntak was said to have told investigators that 225 million rupiah (28,125 dollars) of the money had been channelled to the ruling Golkar party for its June 7 general election campaign.

The rest of the money was allegedly used to repair the office of an unnamed government institution, Bisnis said.

Satellite Launch To Boost DTH In India
Calcutta, India (SPX) Dec 28, 2005
The successful launch Thursday of India's heaviest satellite from spaceport of Kourou in French Guyana may have boosted the country's space research efforts to yet another level, but it has also lifted the spirits of at least three Direct-To-Home televisions broadcasters, one of which has been waiting for years to launch its services in India.
