Indonesia's Telkom Wants Merger With Indosat

Jakarta (AFP) September 27, 1999 -
Indonesia's PT Telkommunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) has indicated its interest in a merger with satellite operator PT Indosat to survive competition, a report said Monday.

Telkom's operational director John Welly said the merger of the two sole telecommunications operators in Indonesia would boost their strength and enable them to compete with foreign telecom giants.

"As an individual entity, we are too small for those foreign operators. We should join forces so that we can compete head-to-head with them," Welly was quoted as saying by The Jakarta Post newspaper.

Telkom holds exclusive rights to provide local fixed line and fixed wireless telecommunications services nationwide until 2010 and domestic long distance services until 2005.

Indosat and its joint venture Satelit Palapa Indonesia (Satelindo) hold exclusive rights for overseas long distance services until 2004.

"Without forging a business alliance, Telkom and Indost will be too small to compete with the world's telecom giants in the era of free competition," Welly said.

The Post said Telkom and Indosat had assets of 24 trillion rupiah (2.8 trillion dollars), and 4.8 trillion rupiah respectively, as of December 1998.

Indosat's public relations general manager Budi Prasetyo said the company had studied the costs and benefits of a merger with Telkom, the Post said.

"Whether or not Indosat merges with Telkom will be decided by our stakeholders," he said, adding that Indosat's next shareholders meeting was set for October 14," he added.

Satellite Launch To Boost DTH In India
Calcutta, India (SPX) Dec 28, 2005
The successful launch Thursday of India's heaviest satellite from spaceport of Kourou in French Guyana may have boosted the country's space research efforts to yet another level, but it has also lifted the spirits of at least three Direct-To-Home televisions broadcasters, one of which has been waiting for years to launch its services in India.
