ITT Industries Awarded Next Generation GOES Weather Satellite

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center has awarded ITT Industries a $20 million contract for formulation phase work on an advanced sensor. The sensor, a Hyperspectral Environmental Suite (HES), will go on the next generation weather satellites operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The HES sensor will be a primary instrument on NOAA's Advanced Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) beginning with the GOES-R mission in 2012. The HES instrument will provide vertical atmospheric profiles that National Weather Service forecasters will use for critical storm watches.

In addition, HES will provide wind vector profiles surrounding the warm core of cyclones and hurricanes revealing steering winds and storm direction. This will greatly improve forecasters' ability to predict where and when severe storms will strike.

ITT Industries is the designer and builder of primary instruments on the current GOES satellites and is competing for both the HES and Advanced Imager on the next generation of GOES.

ITT's partners for the HES formulation phase work include Northrop Grumman Space Technology, DRS, ABB Bomem and SSG Precision Optics.
