Hurricane Bertha churns through central Atlantic
Miami (AFP) July 8, 2008 Hurricane Bertha, the first hurricane of the 2008 season, plowed through the central Atlantic early Tuesday with winds blowing at 195 kilometers (120 miles) per hour but staying far away from land, the US National Hurricane Center said. At 5:00 am (0900 GMT) the category three storm was located 1,085 kilometers east-northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands and was moving to the northwest at 17 kilometers per hour, the NHC said. That put it on a course for Bermuda, but the NHC expects the storm to take a sharp turn onto a northward course and bypass the islands well to the east. "Some fluctuations in intensity may occur today, but a gradual weakening trend is expected to begin within the next couple of days," the NHC said.
