Gilat To Plug 100,000 Europeans Into Satellite Backbone

The new two-way satellite service is expected to be especially attractive to those in rural and suburban areas who do not have access to any other broadband connectivity solutions.

Petah Tikva - May 14, 2001
Gilat Satellite has signed an interim agreement with the entertainment, communications and information services division of a very large, multinational company to provide a 100,000-site broadband satellite communications network.

The Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) equipment will serve as the foundation for Europe's first consumer, two-way broadband satellite Internet service, which the provider plans to publicly launch in the near future. The provider expects to make its two-way broadband satellite Internet service available to consumers and small businesses throughout Europe in the third quarter of this year.

The new two-way satellite service is expected to be especially attractive to those in rural and suburban areas who do not have access to any other broadband connectivity solutions.

It will offer significant benefits to consumers, including a persistent, or "always on" connection that saves time compared to competing services which require users to dial up to the Internet.

It will also eliminate the need for a telephone line dedicated for Internet use. The service will initially be provided via Gilat's satellite hub in Stuttgart, Germany. In the future, the service will be operated via a hub at the provider's facility.

Under the terms of the agreement, Gilat will sell the provider VSAT equipment and services on a wholesale basis. The provider will be committed to purchase 100,000 VSATs from Gilat over a three-year period, under the terms of a final agreement, once signed.

The parties have agreed to conclude the final details of the definitive agreement within 90 days of the signing of the interim agreement. There can be no assurance that this interim agreement will result in a final agreement, or as to the terms of any such agreement, nor whether the anticipated orders will be placed or implemented in the time estimated.

Gilat brings award-winning VSAT technology and valuable consumer-market experience to the agreement. Gilat is a joint venture partner and technology provider to StarBand Communications Inc. - America's first nationwide consumer, two-way, high-speed satellite Internet service.

Gilat's Internet-via-satellite solution includes patented quality-of-service technology, enabling Internet traffic to be controlled by user, by application and by time of day.

Gilat Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Yoel Gat said, "This agreement helps us further realize our corporate goal of providing VSAT-based Internet solutions to leading satellite service providers worldwide.

We now provide VSAT technology to first-ever consumer satellite Internet ventures in the United States, Europe and Latin America. We expect that this contract will serve as the cornerstone of Gilat's StarBand Europe wholesale operation that we expect to formally introduce later this year."
