Failure to pass START in 2010 dangerous to US security: Biden

Washington (AFP) Nov 16, 2010
Failure to pass the landmark START nuclear treaty with Russia this year would "endanger our national security," US Vice President Joe Biden warned Tuesday after a top senator voiced doubt about its approval.

"Failure to pass the New START Treaty this year would endanger our national security," Biden said in a statement in which he cited the agreement's broad bipartisan endorsement by several former secretaries of state and defense.

"Given new START's bipartisan support and enormous importance to our national security, the time to act is now and we will continue to seek its approval by the Senate before the end of the year."

Earlier on Tuesday, the Senate's number-two Republican, Jon Kyl, said he doubted the pact could be passed before 2011.
