Paris - May 18, 1999 - Eutelsat's W3 satellite, launched on April 12 out of Cape Canaveral by an Atlas IIAS rocket, officially went into service yesterday morning at 7 degrees East when traffic on Eutelsat II-F4 was transferred to the new satellite. Eutelsat II-F4 is now moving to 10 degrees East in order to replace Eutelsat II-F2 which in turn will be repositioned at the Atlantic Gate 12.5 degrees West position. W3 is a 24-transponder Ku-band satellite, highly flexible in its configuration, carrying a Widebeam providing coverage of Europe, the Atlantic Islands, North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia, and a steerable Spotbeam which is centred over the Aegean region with a coverage spanning from central Europe to the Middle East. At least 14 transponders will be operated in the fixed Widebeam and up to 10 may be operated in the Spotbeam with the possibility to switch these transponders one-by-one in receive and transmit between the Widebeam and the Spotbeam, according to customer requirement. Having completed its mission at 7 degrees East, Eutelsat II-F4 is now drifting to 10 degrees East where it will replace Eutelsat II-F2. This will enable the 16 transponders on the fully stabilized Eutelsat II-F2 to complement Eutelsat I-F5 which is already at 12.5 degrees West, and will reinforce the Atlantic Gate Mission to offer capacity for Internet backbone connections, intranet and extranet networks and broadcasting of consumer services from America directly into Europe. Eutelsat plans to deploy the Atlantic Bird 1 20-transponder satellite at 12.5 degrees West in first quarter 2001. With a fleet of 14 satellites, Paris-based Eutelsat is Europe's leading satellite operator and ranks as one of the largest globally. In addition to pioneering the delivery of Internet backbone, push and cache services in Europe, Eutelsat's satellites broadcast more than 450 digital and analogue television channels to over 70 million satellite and cable homes, and are used for corporate networks, satellite newsgathering, telephony and mobile voice, data and positioning services.
