DRS Technologies To Produce Monitoring Systems for US Army Comsats

The Wideband Gapfiller satellite

DRS Technologies, Inc. has received a contract to provide satellite communications systems to support the Integrated Monitoring and Power Control Subsystem (IMPCS). The IMPCS controls military satellite communications links to ensure efficient data transmission and maintain the required level of service.

The $3.2 million order was received by DRS from ITT Industries' Systems Division in Colorado Springs, Colorado. For the award, DRS will produce Spectral Monitoring Systems (SMS) to aid military network operators in monitoring, controlling and managing satellite communications traffic and in optimizing the use of available bandwidth.

DRS also will provide support for system integration into the IMPCS network. Work for this order will be performed by the company's DRS Tactical Systems (West) unit in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Deliveries are expected to commence in April 2004 and continue for six months.

"This award validates DRS's state-of-the-art approach to realizing high-performance, embedded digital signal processing systems," said Steven T. Schorer, president of DRS's Electronic Systems Group.

"This product represents the successful blending of leading edge digitization and signal processing technologies into a cohesive, elite system. No other system exists in the market today offering the dynamic range, bandwidth and real-time signal processing performance of our Spectral Monitoring Systems."

The IMPCS will be delivered to the Project Manager, Defense Communications and Army Transmission Systems (PM DCATS) and will be installed in network control terminals at various locations to support both the Defense Satellite Communications System and Wideband Gapfiller Satellite communications networks.

The Defense Satellite Communications System is the only high-capacity, Government-owned, operated and maintained global communications system available to the Department of Defense, designed to provide vital Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C4I) services through advanced satellite communications.

The Wideband Gapfiller Satellite is a high-capacity military satellite communications system designed to support newer and far greater capabilities than those provided by current systems, and is compatible with existing control systems and terminals.

It will serve as a bridge between currently employed systems and the Advanced Wideband Satellite system - a high-capacity tactical communications system currently planned for use in 2008.
