Comsat International Acquires Vicom
Mclean VA (SPX) Sep 01, 2004 Comsat International, a full-service provider of voice and data communications throughout Latin America, announced Tuesday that it has acquired Vicom Ltda. Vicom, a provider of satellite services and metropolitan fiber circuits in Brazil, is a subsidiary of Net Servicos de Comunicacao S/A. ("NET"). Under the agreement, which was signed following regulatory approval by Anatel, Comsat has acquired 100% of the outstanding shares of Vicom, as well as use of certain fiber optic infrastructure owned by NET. Comsat and Vicom together will offer a full range of network services to enterprises and carriers, including: Satellite-based VSAT and SCPC services throughout Brazil; Metropolitan fiber transport services in major cities of Brazil; Digital video broadcasting services; Local, national and regional frame relay networks on their own backbone; Digital leased lines; and IP-based Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) using their fiber-based terrestrial and satellite networks covering all of Brazil, and interconnected to Comsat's pan-American fiber based network. In addition, Vicom is a leading provider of engineering, installation, maintenance and repair services for the satellite and terrestrial communications sector in Brazil. Vicom currently operates a fully equipped repair laboratory for component-level repair of sophisticated telecommunications equipment, staffed by certified technicians, and has technical field services resources available in 22 cities throughout the country. Comsat intends to continue to offer these services and grow this line of business regionally using its established base throughout Latin America.
