South Korea on Wednesday urged North Korea to stop its reported preparations for a long-range missile test. These are key dates in Pyongyang's missile development:

Early 1970s: Involved in China's missile development, acquires missile technology

1976-1981: Introduces Soviet-made Scud-B and launchers from Egypt

1984: Test-fires improved Scud-B

1986: Test-fires Scud-C

1988: Deploys Scud-B and Scud-C

1989: Assumed start of Rodong missile development

1993: Test-fires Rodong-1

1994: Taepodong-1 in development stage

1998: Deploys Rodong missiles

Aug 1998: Test-fires Taepodong-1 over Japan

Sept 1999: Declares a moratorium on missile tests

May 2001: Extends moratorium until 2003

Sept 2002: Leader Kim Jong-Il extends moratorium "beyond" 2003

Dec 2002: 15 North Korean-made Scuds seized on Yemen-bound ship

Jan 2003: Ambassador to China says moratorium may end

Feb 24, 2003: Test-fires anti-ship missile into Sea of Japan

March 3, 2005 Ends moratorium on long-range missile testing

March 10, 2003 Test-fires second anti-ship missile into Sea of Japan

May 1, 2005 Test-fires short-range missile into Sea of Japan

China Deploys New Dong Feng

China's new Dong Feng-31, or CSS-9, road-mobile intercontinental ballistic missile is expected to enter service during 2006, Jane's Intelligence reported on its Web site janes.com on June 9. The DF-31 is expected to be followed by the extended-range DF-31A version in 2007, the Web site said.
