China's Wen again vows food, product safety
Singapore (AFP) Nov 19, 2007 Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Monday reiterated his commitment to ensuring food and product safety, as his country tries to keep dangerous goods from reaching store shelves around the world. "We take product quality and food safety seriously and we will work to uphold the interests of both Chinese and foreign consumers," Wen said in a wide-ranging speech on the economy at the National University of Singapore. In recent months, China has scrambled to clamp down on shoddy goods in a bid to build confidence in the "made in China" label. That label has been tarnished by a string of safety scandals in recent months, with Chinese products ranging from seafood to car tyres to children's toys being subjected to bans and recalls overseas amid safety fears. The government has said a four-month campaign launched in August is aimed at strengthening inspection and monitoring efforts, while tightening production licensing and labelling requirements. China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which is holding its annual summit in Singapore this week, agreed last month to strengthen food safety cooperation. Beijing has in recent months suspended imports of seafood and other products from Southeast Asian countries including Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam, citing health reasons.
